CALDWELL, Idaho – A pair of second half goals and a
Kylee Atkins shutout in the net proved to be all the College of Idaho would need in a 2-0 defeat of Providence on Friday afternoon at Simplot Stadium.
Madison Glascock netted the initial tally for the Yotes (3-3-2, 2-2-0 CCC) in the 63rd minute when
Payton Mongelli served up a beautiful pass to the speedy forward, who finished a 1-v-1 battle with her defender by putting the ball into the near post and past goalkeeper Dakota Neumann.
Looking to extend the lead, C of I would benefit from a foul by the Argos (2-7-0, 1-4-0) in the 73rd minute to set
Brynna Herridge up with a direct free kick. Herridge would leave little doubt on her opportunity, firing a missile past Neumann to make it a 2-0 game in favor of the Yotes.
C of I was strong defensively once again in this one, shutting out an opponent for the fourth time this season and improving to 3-0-2 in matches in which they hold the opposition to two goals or fewer.
Atkins brought in five saves in the win for the Yotes.
Head coach
Brian Smith saw his team outshoot Providence 17-10, including holding a 10-6 advantage in shots on goal.
The final 45 minutes saw an uptick in created opportunities for the Yotes, as a handful of players including
Kaitlyn Ramon,
Cameron Coyle and
Chloe Teets helped get the ball into the attacking zone on multiple occasions.
