2019 Women's Soccer Notebook - Week 4

COMING UP: vs. Eastern Oregon, Friday, 4 p.m.

COMPLETE MEDIA GAME NOTES

LAST WEEK: at Corban (L 2-1); at Northwest Christian (W 6-0)

MULTIMEDIA: Live Stats and Live Video of Friday's match will be available through the C of I Stretch Internet Portal

HOME COOKING: Northwest (Oct. 26, 2018) is the only team that has entered Caldwell since October of 2017 and come away with a victory over the Yotes. Over that time period, C of I boasts a record of 6-1-3 overall at Simplot Stadium.

OFFENSIVE FIREWORKS: With the 6-0 defeat of Northwest Christian last week, C of I totaled the highest scoring output in CCC play for the program since an 8-1 win over Cascade College during the 2003 season.

AGAINST RANKED OPPONENTS UNDER SMITH: Since Brian Smith took over as the head coach of the women's soccer team in 2011, C of I holds a 1-10-1 record against ranked opponents. The lone win came on Oct. 10, 2014 against No. 1 ranked Concordia.

ABOUT EASTERN OREGON: The Mountaineers are coming off a 10-0 thumping of Northwest Christian and a 2-2 draw at Corban to start conference play last week. EUO sits in the No. 9 spot in the NAIA Coaches Poll and went 16-3-2 last year. To this point in the season the Mounties have outscored the opposition 22-3 and are outshooting them 115-58, including an impressive 56 percent shots on goal percentage. Morgan Farrington (5 goals, 3 assists), Camie Edgington (3 goals, 3 assists) and Mackinley Gregus (4 goals) lead the way on the attack, with goalkeeper Cydni Cottrell starting all six matches and allowing just three goals.

COMMON OPPONENTS: EOU and C of I have three common opponents to this point in the schedule. The Mountaineers defeated Embry Riddle 2-0, won 10-0 at Northwest Christian and earned a 2-2 draw at Corban. The Yotes worked a draw against Embry-Riddle, lost 2-1 at Corban and handled Northwest Christian 6-0.

IMMEDIATE IMPACT: Freshman Elise Payne has wasted little time becoming a key striker for the Yotes, leading the squad with three goals on the season. Payne has done the work in an efficient matter as well, finding the back of the net on 50 percent of her shots. Junior transfer Sydney Clements is the other new face to have scored a goal so far this season.

RETURNERS MAKING MARK: With eight shots on goal, Madison Glascock leads the team. Emma Powley is second on the list with six shots on goal. Both players have found the net twice to this point in the 2019 campaign.

EQUAL ACTION: C of I has maintained a steady presence in the net all year with the keeper duo of Shae Waters and Kylee Atkins. Both goalies have faced 42 shots, with Waters yielding just two goals and Atkins three goals on the season as the two continue to split halves.

LOCKING IT DOWN: The Yotes are second in the CCC in goals against average, yielding just 0.83 per contest. Opponents have scored only five goals all season against C of I, including three shutouts. EOU leads the conference with a 0.50 goals against average.

SECURITY BLANKETS: Defenders Kaya Evans and Brynna Herridge have been impressive in ways not seen directly on the stat sheet. Each player has been a constant on the C of I back line, leading the way for the Yotes to have allowed the second fewest goals in the CCC this year, with just five getting by the keepers. Evans assisted on a goal in the 6-0 win over Northwest Christian last week. Herridge and Evans are also the only players on the roster who have started each match so far.

OFFENSE ARRIVES: The six goals in the defeat of NCU marked the first time in 2019 that C of I or an opponent had scored more than two goals against each other. For the Yotes, it was the first time the offensive attack had generated more than one goal in a match.

PAYTON ON POINT: Sophomore Payton Anderson scored the first goal of her career against NCU and tallied an assist against Corban.

LEXIE LOCKS IN: Sophomore Lexie Hibler also recorded the first goal of her career in the match against the Beacons.

SMITTY SUCCESS: Since taking over as the women's soccer head coach in 2011, Smith's teams have never lost at home to Eastern Oregon. The last time the Mountaineers won in Caldwell was on Oct. 17, 2007 in overtime by a final score of 1-0. Since beginning to play at Simplot Stadium in 2009, C of I holds a 3-0-2 record at home against the Mounties.

FRIENDLIER SCHEDULE: After 26 days without a home contest, C of I is finally back at Simplot Stadium for three consecutive matches, starting on Friday against EOU and continuing next weekend when Providence and Carroll come to town. C of I had a similar road stretch in 2018, with no home match until Oct. 5 when Providence came to Caldwell. The Yotes emerged from those eight games with a record of 4-3-1 overall.

BALANCED CONFERENCE: Rocky Mountain and Northwest were the only CCC teams to emerge with two victories after the first weekend of conference play. All but four of the teams in the conference finished the week with at least one point for their efforts.
