LEWISTON, Idaho – A big day from
Austin Van Horne wasn't enough for the College of Idaho, as Lewis-Clark State outlasted the Coyotes to compete a 4-game weekend sweep at Ed Cheff Stadium.
The Warriors (27-12-1, 19-7) claimed a 5-0 victory in the opener and earned a walkoff 3-2 win in 13 innings in the late game.
Van Horne did his part for the Yotes (16-27, 10-14), going 4-for-9 with three doubles, while pitching six strong innings in Game 2.
Kyle Callahan smashed a pair of 2-run homers in Game 1 for L-C, with Gerald Hein and Andrew Najeeb-Brush combining for a 3-hit shutout.
In the nightcap, the Yotes took a 2-0 lead in the fourth on the strength of a Van Horne RBI double and a
Matthew Clay sacrifice fly. However, a Callahan homer pulled the hosts within a run and Kody Garvin tied the game in the ninth with a solo home run. LCSC would win the game in the 13th on a Darren Trainor sacrifice fly.
Van Horne pitched a season-high six innings, allowing a run on three hits with five strikeouts, with
Nathan Pena also going six strong innings, striking out three.
It equaled the third longest game in program history and equaled the longest game ever vs. LCSC.
C of I returns home next weekend, hosting Corban in a 4-game series.
