Maddox Blast Helps Yotes Salvage Doubleheader Split

CALDWELL, Idaho – College of Idaho rebounded from a sloppy first nine innings of action, getting a go-ahead home run and five RBI from Marissa Maddox to split a Cascade Conference doubleheader with the University of Providence at frigid Symms Field.

The Argos (1-6, 1-5 CCC) got a 6-hit shutout from Hannah VanDomelen and took advantage of six C of I errors in a 6-0 win, before the Yotes scored the final eight runs in an 8-3 victory to claim the series win.

UP had a 1-0 lead in the opener – which was suspended from Tuesday due to rain – and added an additional unearned run in the first, with Hannah Tarum rapping a 2-run single in the second – allowing two more unearned tallies to cross the plate.

It was more than enough for VanDomelen, who worked out of trouble throughout the game - as C of I (17-3, 5-1) stranded nine runners on base.

Kylie Smith and Alyssa Goff each had two hits in the loss, with Tarum going 2-for-4 with three RBI in the win for UP.

The Argos started quickly in Game 2 – as three first inning C of I errors led to a UP run, with the visitors tacking on a wind-aided 2-run homer by Karlie Southworth in the third.

C of I got on the board in the bottom of the third – as Trystin Crofts doubled home a run and Maddox lifted a sacrifice fly to pull the Yotes within 3-2. Two innings later, Smith and Goff led off with singles, and an out later, Maddox blasted her fourth homer of the year to give C of I the lead for good.

The hosts added three insurance runs in the sixth in support of Colette Robert, who struck out five in a complete game effort to pick up her eighth win of the season.

Smith finished Game 2 3-for-4 with three runs scored, Goff was 2-for-3, with Maddox going 2-for-3 with five RBI.  Tarum was 3-for-4 in the loss for UP.

C of I hits the road this weekend for a key 4-game series at Corban University.
