SURPRISE, Ariz. – Playing their first-ever home game, Ottawa University scored 11 runs in the middle innings to top the College of Idaho, 14-2, at Surprise Stadium.
The Spirit (2-6), a first-year NCCAA program, took advantage of five C of I errors – recording a combined seven doubles and seven stolen bases in the victory.
C of I (3-7) took a 1-0 lead in the second inning, as
Dominic Conigliaro singled and scored on a throwing error after a
Kole Lane bunt single.
OUAZ answered in a big way – scoring three runs in the fourth and fifth innings, adding five more in the sixth to break the game wide open.
Johnny Hyland delivered the Yotes other run on the night with a seventh inning RBI single.
Conigliaro and Lane each had two hits to lead the Yotes, with Braxton Smith going 2-for-3 with three RBI for the Spirit. OUAZ starter Cole Anderson struck out eight in six-plus innings to earn the win, while C of I starter
Hunter Boyd allowed seven runs, four earned, in five innings, fanning five.
The two teams play the middle games of the four-game series tomorrow with a noon doubleheader.
