COLLEGE PLACE, Wash. – College of Idaho used a stellar defensive performance to overcome a poor shooting night, as the Lady Yotes won their fifth game in six outings, completing a weekend sweep of Walla Walla University with a 63-45 victory at Windemuth Court.
Alyssa Case led the Yotes (6-7, 4-3 CCC) with 15 points, eight rebounds and three steals – anchoring a defense that forced 23 turnovers that C of I capitalized on, scoring 28 points off the miscues.
Leading 18-9 after the first quarter, C of I scored the first 13 points the next frame – as a
Lindy Westendorf lay-up and a Case runner started the surge – with a
Makenna Schritter 3-point play and consecutive Case triples extending the margin to 22-points.
The Wolves (2-13, 1-5) hung around, outscoring the Yotes 12-2 over the final five minutes of the period to get within 33-21 at the half. However, the visitors blitzed WWU to start the third quarter – as Case scored seven quick points in a 12-2 run to put the game away.
Jocelyn Cook-Cox had 11 points and seven rebounds with
Madison Holly adding 10 points and seven rebounds for C of I. The Lady Yotes made just 32-percent of their field goal attempts, but used a 48-33 edge on the glass – including 22 offensive rebounds – to keep the Wolves at bay.
Itzel Rubio led WWU with 20 points and Carolina Montes scored 11, but the Wolves were held to just 34-percent shooting from the field.
C of I returns home next weekend, hosting Northwest and Evergreen in key conference match-ups.
