CALDWELL, Idaho – Esteban Castaneda converted a 20-yard free kick in the 61st minute to lift Southern Oregon to a physical 2-1 victory over College of Idaho at Simplot Stadium.
In a game that featured 33 fouls and eight cautions, the visiting Raiders (2-5, 2-0 CCC) scored the first and last goals of the afternoon to complete a weekend road sweep.
After having a goal disallowed due to an offside call in the 52nd minute, SOU took advantage of a hand ball by the Yotes (4-2, 1-1) just outside the box directly in front of the goal. Castenada looped a bending shot into the top left corner of the net for the go-ahead goal.
C of I had a quality opportunity for an equalizer with 10 minutes remaining, as the Yotes played a ball back to the unmarked
Ahmet Huremovic, who blasted a 25-yard dart just above the cross bar.
In the first half, SOU opened the scoring with a great combination – as Paul Matyas flicked home a strike after feeds from Kelly Gieber and Gonzalo Garcia. The Yotes countered three minutes later, as
Daniel Camargo crossed a ball to Huremovic, who ripped a one-timer from a tough 25-yard angle into the right corner of the net.
SOU held a slim 12-10 edge in shots and had a 7-3 edge in shots on frame. The Raiders also held a sizable 21-12 edge in total fouls, though the Yotes were handed five of the eight cautions.
C of I returns to action next Saturday, hosting nationally-ranked Rocky Mountain at 2:30 p.m.
