KIRKLAND, Wash. –
Destiny Turner homered twice and drove in six runs, while College of Idaho pitchers tossed back-to-back shutouts, handing head coach
Al Mendiola his 300th career win in a doubleheader sweep of Northwest University at Everest Park.
Turner drove in five runs and
Colette Robert tossed a three-hitter in the 12-0 mercy rule shortened opener, while
Ashley Pesek and Robert combined on a six-hitter in a 3-0 Game 2 win.
Mendiola becomes the fifth C of I coach in any sport to record 300 career wins – joining baseball coaches
Shawn Humberger and Tim Mooney; basketball coach
Marty Holly; and his own wife, Lady Yote volleyball coach,
Liz Mendiola, in the exclusive club.
The Yotes (11-14, 8-6 CCC) dominated the opener, scoring runs in every inning of the contest.
Delaney Atkins led off with a triple and scored on a Turner sacrifice fly, while later in the frame, an infield single from
Katelyn Geyer plated
Angelina Romero to make it 2-0.
C of I made it 4-0 in the second on RBI singles from Romero and Turner, with a
Kristin Paulazzo RBI single in the third adding to the lead. Turner extended the margin to 7-0 in the fourth with a long two-run homer, while the Yotes took advantage of four walks and two errors in a five-run fifth to invoke the mercy rule.
Robert walked two and struck out one in her second shutout of the year – limiting the Eagles (7-18, 3-11) to just two runners in scoring position. Turner was 2-for-2 with five RBI; Atkins was 2-for-2 with three runs scored, with Paulazzo going 2-for-3.
Game 2 was scoreless into the fifth, when Paulazzo doubled with one out and scored an out later on an Atkins RBI double. C of I tacked on two key insurance runs in the sixth – one on a Turner home run and another on a
Courtney Ellis bases loaded walk.
Ashley Pesek limited NU to just four hits through six innings, but gave up consecutive singles to start the seventh. The Yotes went to Robert, who worked around a hit by pitch and a deep fly ball to center field to earn her first save.
Paulazzo was the lone player on either team with multiple hits, going 2-for-2.
The teams close out the weekend series with a doubleheader tomorrow at 11 a.m. (PDT)
