SPRINGFIELD, Ore. –
Sabrina Mallett converted her attempt in the fifth round of a penalty kick shootout and the College of Idaho withstood a Rocky Mountain miss in their final attempt, as the Lady Yotes advanced to the semifinals of the Cascade Conference Championships with a 3-2 victory in penalties.
The two rivals played to a 0-0 draw through 110 minutes – with the second-seeded Bears (13-3-1) taking a 2-1 lead in the shootout after three rounds. C of I pulled even on a
Megan Aumeier conversion and watched as Rocky's Amber Pearson miss her attempt. Mallett stepped to the spot and drove her 1-on-1 chance into the twine, while Hannah Borgel ripped her try well above the crossbar, giving C of I the win.
The Lady Yotes (7-9-2) will meet top-seed Eastern Oregon tomorrow at 7 p.m (PT) for a spot in the title match.
RMC held a 14-6 edge in total shots through regulation – with eight of the shots on frame – but C of I's
Brittany Houghton was spot on, making eight saves in recording her sixth clean sheet of 2017. The Yotes picked up the pressure in the first 10 minute extra session recording four shots, but Maia Wetzel made one of her four saves on the day to keep the match going. The Bears nearly won the match in the 110th minute, as Borgel made a long run on a counter attack, but her 25-yard drive clanged off the crossbar.
C of I will be playing in their fifth semifinal match-up in program history – looking for their first trip to the championship match since 2009.
