KIRKLAND, Wash. – Northwest University converted a penalty kick with just five minutes remaining in the match, lifting the Eagles to a 2-1 victory over the College of Idaho at the NU Soccer Field.
A hard foul just inside the box gave Winter Wirkkala a chance from the spot, with the Eagles (9-7, 6-4 CCC) striker punching a low shot inside the left post for the eventual game-winner.
Despite the loss, the Lady Yotes (6-8-1, 4-5-1) hold their own postseason destiny, needing either a win or a draw tomorrow against Evergreen to secure no worse than the No. 8 seed in the Cascade Conference Championships. C of I could also earn a playoff spot with a Carroll loss at Southern Oregon.
C of I jumped to a quick 1-0 lead just 64 seconds into the match, as Katelyn Benevidez played a cross to the unmarked
Hailey Woods, who drove a shot into the left corner of the net.
Keeper
Brittany Houghton turned away seven NU shots on goal in the first half, but the Eagles scored on their third shot of the second period, as Hannah Nicholson played a ball to the top of the 6-yard-box, with Rylee Rassier finishing the equalizer.
The Yotes had two quality chances to regain the lead – but
Makenna Aguilar hit the right post in the 58th minute and
Emily Aspden hit the left post in the 76th minute.
NU held a 22-11 edge in total shots and a 6-1 edge in corners in the victory.
