SALEM, Ore. – Toby Roth went coast-to-coast and scored on a contested lay-up with seven-tenths of a second remaining, lifting Corban University to a 74-73 victory over the College of Idaho at C.E. Jeffers Center.
The Yotes (14-7, 7-4 CCC) erased a late five point deficit, as
Joey Nebeker converted a driving left-handed lay-in with seven seconds to go, giving C of I a 73-72 lead. Roth answered, taking a pass in back court and sprinting to the basket, flinging a left-handed runner off the glass, curling around the left side of the rim and through the net to provide the winning margin.
Corban (13-8, 6-5) rallied from a 16-point first half deficit and a 49-35 margin early in the second half – making six of their first eight 3-point attempts. A Roth triple capped a 23-7 run to give the Warriors the lead with eight minutes to play, with a Jake Love triple giving Corban a 70-65 edge with five minutes remaining.
C of I did not quit, as a pair of free throws and a lay-up from
Aitor Zubizarreta cut the gap to 72-71 – and following two misses on front ends of 1-and-1 free throws by the Warriors, worked the ball to Nebeker, who converted the runner to give the Yotes the short-lived lead.
In the first half, the Yotes used a pair of big runs to gain control – holding Corban without a made field goal for a seven minute stretch, using a 14-1 run to take a 23-12 lead.
Roosevelt Adams stepped up with consecutive 3's in a 13-2 run late in the half that gave C of I a 37-21 lead.
Nebeker scored 14 of his 16 points in the second half, making 7-of-11 field goals.
Aziz Leeks,
Talon Pinckney and
Dominique Jordan all scored nine, with Adams scoring eight points and grabbing a game-high 11 rebounds.
A.J. Monterossi scored 17 points to lead Corban, with Joel Johnson scoring 12 and Love and Roth each adding 10 in the win.
C of I returns to action tomorrow afternoon with a 3 p.m. (PT) tip-off at No. 13 ranked Northwest Christian.
