CALDWELL, Idaho –
Hannah Coverley punched home the game-winning goal with four minutes remaining in the second extra session, helping the College of Idaho to a 2-1 victory over Linfield College at Simplot Stadium.
The sophomore pounced on a loose ball off a
Victoria Cerda corner kick, touching a shot past Wildcats (0-2) keeper Sarah Bailey for the golden goal.
The Yotes (2-1) dominated the match statistically, holding a 25-5 edge in total shots, including 13 shots on frame – but Bailey kept the visiting Division III side in the match with 11 saves,
Shelby Derocher got Linfield on the board in the 17th minute, making a great run down the left side of the pitch, driving a 20-yard shot into the bottom right corner of the net.
C of I turned up the heat – in the 29th minute, as
Jamiece Yizar blasted a 20-yard shot off the right post, while four minutes later,
Emma Powley launched a shot off the cross bar and following a rebound attempt by Yizar that was blocked,
Megan Aumeier drove home the point blank sitter to even the score.
Following the break, the Wildcats had a chance in the 75th minute, as a cross narrowly missed an unmarked Makenna Clizer at the top of the goal mouth. C of I had a great chance early in the second overtime, as Powley drove a 25-yard shot that Bailey punched over the cross bar – with the resulting corner kick providing the winning opportunity.
