CALDWELL, Idaho – Kevin Hamann and David Wilson combined on a six-hit shutout, with top-ranked Lewis-Clark State using an eight-run sixth inning to pull away for a 16-0 victory over the College of Idaho at Wolfe Field.
Hamann allowed five hits in seven innings of work, fanning seven for his second win, with Wilson retiring 6-of-7 men to close out the Warriors (12-0, 4-0 NAIA West North) 12th-straight victory to open 2016.
LCSC struck first in the third inning as Chase Hafer led off with a triple and scored on a two-out error by the Coyotes (14-5, 2-2) infield. An inning later, Julian Ramon hit a long solo homer to left to extend the lead.
The damage was done in the sixth, as the Warriors sent 13 men to the plate – setting the table with two walks and two hit by pitches. Tyler McDowell had a pair of RBI singles in the inning, with Jacob Zanon contributing a two-run single.
The Warriors added a pair of homers late – as Micah Brown hit a solo shot in the seventh and J.J. Robinson golfed a long three-run shot in the ninth, capping an 18-hit afternoon for LCSC.
Six different C of I hitters had one hit, with
Jake Eddy taking the loss, striking out six men in five-plus innings.
Russell Sweet was the lone Coyote to not allow a run, tossing an inning and two-thirds of shutout ball.
The teams play the middle games of the series tomorrow, with the doubleheader set for noon.
