CALDWELL, Idaho –
Haylee Burnham recorded her first career double-double, scoring 22 points and 10 rebounds on a night the College of Idaho reverted to some old tricks to stun Cascade Conference contender Northwest Christian, 75-54, inside the J.A. Albertson Activities Center.
Box Score Using a back-court trap that helped the Lady Yotes (5-14, 4-9 CCC) to conference titles in 2009 and 2010, C of I forced 21 NCU turnovers – converting 29 points off the miscues in the runaway win. The victory ended a 5-game losing streak for the Coyotes, while snapping a 5-game win streak for the Beacons (13-7, 9-3).
C of I bolted out of the gate, getting 3's from
Kiara Skinner,
Petra Lumpert and
Ryleigh Swagerty in a 17-4 run over the first five minutes. NCU would score eight-straight, including triples from Sami Pitts and Jenna Christenson, to pull within 17-12, only to see the Yotes pick up the pressure. Four free throws by Burnham, a Lumpert basket off a turnover and a Swagerty steal and bucket as the quarter expired, gave the Yotes a 25-12 lead.
The run continued in the second quarter, as five quick Burnham points fueled a 17-4 run to open the frame, giving the hosts their largest lead of the night at 41-19.
NCU would not go away, limiting the Yotes without a made field goal for a 10 minute stretch, cutting the margin to 43-36 on a Niki Duncan 3-pointer midway through the third quarter. However, C of I put the game out of reach, scoring the first 11 points of the fourth quarter to extend the margin to 62-41.
Lumpert had 15 points and four rebounds, with Swagerty scoring 13 points with four steals – as C of I avenged a 20-point loss to the Beacons in December.
Monique Thompson led NCU with 15 points, as the Beacons were limited to just 29-percent shooting in the loss and fell to 0-4 this season when their opponents surpassed the 70-point plateau.
C of I returns to action next weekend with a key road swing to Washington, meeting Northwest on Friday and Evergreen on Saturday.
