PORTLAND, Ore. - Concordia University made a three-run fourth inning stand up, as the top-seeded Cavaliers defeat the College of Idaho, 5-2, at the NAIA West Grouping Championships inside Porter Park.
The Cavaliers (30-21) move on to tomorrow's semifinal, meeting British Columbia, while the Yotes (32-25) will meet the winner of Corban and Menlo at 4 p.m. (PDT) in an elimination game.
CU broke through against C of I starter Markus Lively in the fateful fourth inning, getting RBI singles from Ian Erickson, Konner Reddick, and Hunter Weiss to build a 3-0 lead.
The Coyotes got a run back in the sixth on a Jake Guza walk - but C of I left the bases loaded - three of 10 men stranded on the night.
In the eighth, the Cavs added two huge insurance runs - one on an Erickson sacrifice fly - and another on a Reddick RBI single. Â They were huge, as C of I plated a run in the ninth on a Jake Hennessey RBI single and brought the tying run to the plate, however, Ryan McMonigle coaxed a game-ending double play ball to send CU to the semifinals.
Jordan Spencer got the win, walking five and fanning eight, with McMonigle limiting the Yotes to just two hits to earn the save.
Lively went the distance for C of I, striking out six in the loss, with Hennessey recording the Yotes lone multi-hit game, going 2-for-5.
