TUCSON, Ariz. – Mitch Peschon went 4-for-6 with five RBI, including the go-ahead run-scoring single in the ninth inning, lifting Northwestern College past the College of Idaho, 11-10, at the Kino Sports Complex.
Playing in their fifth game in three days, the Coyotes (10-7) used an eight-run eighth inning to tie the game at 10-10, but watched as the Red Raiders (1-8) answered in the ninth. C of I would load the bases in the bottom of the ninth, but Grant Lang fanned pinch hitter Chase Miller to end the game.
The Orange, Iowa, school scored the first seven runs of the game, with a Peschon three-run homer in the fourth inning staking the squad to the big league. Trailing 10-2, the Yotes sent 12 men to the plate in the eighth – with Matt Hamilton, Johnny Hyland, and Sam Grise all plating runs with bases loaded hit by pitches. Cole Mansanerez had an RBI single; Jake Hennessey was walked with the bases loaded; and Brady Mooney delivered a run with a ground out. Jordan Grubbs capped the frame with a two-run single to tie the score.
NC starter Isaac Horigan was solid, going six-plus innings, striking out seven, with Lang picking up the win in relief.
Grubbs and Grise each had two hits in the loss for the Yotes.
C of I returns home this weekend for a four-game series against Dickinson State.
