CALDWELL, Idaho - The College of Idaho scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning of game one to win in dramatic, walk-off fashion against Corban University, as the two squads closed out a four-game weekend series at Wolfe Field.
The Coyotes (18-9, 2-2) found themselves in another early hole against Corban, trailing 3-1 entering the sixth inning where C of I cut into the lead on a Seth Champlin single to score Kyle Garvin.
The Warriors (12-13, 2-2) took a 3-2 lead into the bottom half of the ninth only to have the Coyotes answer late for consecutive days.Â
A pair of Coyote singles from Seth Champlin and Garvin got the action started for C of I in the final frame. The two runners advanced into scoring position on a passed ball, setting up a Troy Carr intentional walk. Head coach Shawn Humberger sent Matt Hamilton to the plate for a pinch-hit scenario and the product of Buhl, Idaho delivered, sending a shot up the middle, scoring two runners and completing the 4-3 comeback victory.
Game two saw the Coyotes jump out to an early lead 2-0, the first time in the four-game series in which they drew first blood.Â
Trailing 2-0 entering the top half of the fourth, Corban would string together five runs over the next four innings to take a 5-2 advantage into the eighth.Â
Similar to the rally of game one, the Coyotes scored three runs to tie the game at five in the eighth without recording a hit. The Warriors walked two batters, pegged two more, and committed an error that scored three runs.Â
Despite blowing their third lead in four games, the Warriors quickly rallied in the ninth, scoring four runs - three of which came on a Hayden Calvert shot over the left field wall.Â
C of I was able to chip away one of those runs in the bottom of the ninth but left two runners on base in a 9-6 Warrior victory in the series finale.Â
The Coyotes will be back in action next weekend when they travel to Vancouver, British Columbia for four games against the No.24 ranked University of British Columbia, beginning Friday at 3 p.m.
NOTE - The College of Idaho vs Whitman double-header which was originally scheduled for Tuesday, March 17, has been postponed to April 7.
