Lady Yotes Bats Erupt in Friday Sweep

CALDWELL, Idaho – Tying a school record for hits in today's opener, the College of Idaho used timely hitting to sweep a pair of games on Day 2 of the C of I/NNU Classic at Symms Field.

The Lady Yotes (7-10) cruised to an 11-3 victory over British Columbia, while rallying in the late game for an 11-10 win over Great Falls.

C of I pounded out 19 hits in the Game 1 win over UBC (5-15), equaling the top mark in program history.  The Yotes batted around for five first inning runs, getting a Destiny Turner sacrifice fly, RBI singles from Cortni Pena and and Ali Longoria, and a two-run double by Kristin Paulazzo.

The Yotes made it 7-0 in the third on Courtney Ellis and Destiny Campbell RBI singles, with a fourth inning Longoria RBI double extending the margin to 8-0.

UBC broke through in the fourth, as Margarita Sison gapped a two-run double in a three-run frame.  C of I answered to close out the game in the fifth, as Turner doubled in a run, with Pena and Katie Rowe providing RBI singles.

It was more than enough for Longoria, who allowed three hits in four innings of work for her first collegiate win, while going 3-for-4 at the plate.  Campbell and Rowe each added two hits, with Turner, Pena, Ellis, and Alexis Macias each recording two hits.

Game 2 saw UGF (7-3) jump out to a 6-2 lead in the third inning, getting a key Regan Rucks two-run double.  Rowe countered in the bottom of the inning with a solo homer, but Rucks hammered a two-out long ball in the fifth to give the Argonauts a 7-3 lead.

The Yotes won it in the late innings, as back to back fifth inning RBI doubles by Hailey Chambers and Pena, followed by a Paulazzo RBI single, got C of I within 7-6.  An inning later, C of I tied the game on a Turner fielders' choice, with Rowe lacing a two-run single to break the deadlock.  Paulazzo provided two key insurance runs with a triple into the right field corner.

UGF would not quit, taking advantage of a three-base C of I error and a Rucks RBI double to put the tying run at second with one out.  However, Pena buckled down in the circle, fanning Jocelyn Kaufman and Kayeley Lyons to end the game.

Paulazzo was 3-for-4 with four RBI for C of I, with Rowe going 2-for-5 with three RBI and Ellis and Turner each adding two hits.  Pena struck out five in four-plus innings to pick up her fifth win of the season.

Rucks went 3-for-4 with four RBI for UGF in the loss.

C of I returns to action tomorrow, meeting Montana State-Billings at 10 a.m. and Carroll at 2 p.m.
