CALDWELL, Idaho – Cortni Pena took a no-hitter into the sixth inning, helping the College of Idaho end a three-game losing streak with a 7-1 victory over Carroll College in Game 1 of the C of I/NNU Classic at Symms Field.
The junior walked three and struck out three in picking up her fourth win of the season. Pena loaded the bases with two outs in the sixth, with Megan Gipe breaking up the no-hitter with an RBI single through the left side.
The Lady Yotes (5-10) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the third inning, as Destiny Turner gapped a two-run double off the left field wall and Katie Rowe followed with a two-out RBI single.
C of I extended the lead to 6-0 in the fifth as Pena lifted a sacrifice fly and Alexis Macias clubbed a long two-run home run.
Destiny Campbell and Turner each had two hits in the victory for the Lady Yotes in the first of 23 games in this weekend's tournament.
Gipe took the loss for the Saints (2-5), allowing seven runs on 10 hits with five strikeouts.
C of I returns to action, playing games tomorrow afternoon against British Columbia at 2 p.m. and Great Falls at 4 p.m.
