Unearned Runs Hurt Lady Yotes in Losses in Oregon

HAPPY VALLEY, Ore. – Despite an offense that produced 24 hits on the day, 10 unearned runs allowed led to a pair of defeats for the College of Idaho on the final day of the Northwest Cup at Hood View Park.

The Lady Yotes (4-10) had 15 hits in the opener, but Saint Martin's used a big first inning to take a 6-4 victory, while Simpson took advantage of six unearned runs in a 9-1 victory in the finale.

In Game 1, the Saints (7-9) took advantage of a two out C of I throwing error to plate four runs in the opening inning, with Megan Miller doubling home a run and Jackie Schmaeling singling home a pair.

C of I got single runs in the first and third innings – as Cortni Pena singled home a run in the opening frame and Katie Rowe scored on a passed ball in the third.  However, the Yotes stranded the bases loaded in the first, and left two runners on in the second and third – finishing the game with 13 runners left on base.

A Rowe RBI ground out in the fourth got C of I within 4-3, but a Kara Wall RBI double in the fifth and an Alyssa Slate sacrifice fly in the sixth gave SMU a three-run lead.  An Alexis Macias RBI single in the sixth got C of I within 6-4, but could not get closer.

Jodie Hoadland was 4-for-5; Destiny Turner was 3-for-4; with Macias and Madison Cushing each recording two hits for C of I in the loss.

Game 2 saw the Yotes strike first as Hoagland doubled, stole third, and scored on a Turner ground out.  However, the Redhawks got a two-out , two-run double from Jessica Dager in the bottom of the frame to take the lead.

SU put the game away, batting around for seven runs in the third – six of which were unearned.  Marisa Marmolejo had a two-run double and Kaylana Mah tripled home two in the outburst.

Amy Rodriguez worked around eight singles to get the win for Simpson.

Kristin Paulazzo and Courtney Ellis each had two hits in the loss for C of I.

The Lady Yotes return to the Treasure Valley to co-host the seven-team C of I/NNU Invitational, beginning Thursday at 4 p.m. vs. Carroll College.
