HAPPY VALLEY, Ore. – Destiny Turner had four hits and four RBI on the day, but it wasn't enough for the College of Idaho softball team, as the Lady Yotes dropped two Northwest Cup games at Hood View Park.
The Lady Yotes (3-7) lost their opener to Great Falls, 10-4, and then squandered a 9-0 first inning lead to fall to Simpson, 12-11.
In Game 1, both C of I and UGF (1-0) traded home runs – as Kirstie Thomas hit a solo shot for the Argos and Katie Rowe lined a solo homer for the Yotes. UGF strung together five straight two out hits in the third, including two-run singles from Regan Rucks and Kayeley Lyons to take a 5-1 lead.
C of I would cut the gap to 5-3 in the third on a UGF throwing error, but the Argos answered with two in the fourth, two in the fifth, and a Lyons homer in the seventh to put the game away.
Lyons was 3-for-4 with four RBI for UGF, with Chelsea Szymanski going 2-for-3 for C of I. Cortni Pena took the loss for the Yotes, despite a career-high 11 strikeouts.
Game 2 saw the Yotes score nine first inning runs – sending 12 batters to the plate. Destiny Turner opened the scoring with a two-run double, Hailey Chambers singled in a run, Courtney Ellis roped a three-run triple, and Chelsea Szymanski clubbed a two-run homer.
The No. 10 ranked Redhawks used the long ball to get back into the game, as Courtney Thomas hit a two-run homer in the first, and Mlissy Silveria and Marissa Bravo hit two-run shots in the second to cut the gap to 9-6.
With C of I leading 11-8 in the sixth, Thomas hit her second two-run bomb of the game to cut the margin to one run. In the seventh, SU tied the game on a Bravo two-out RBI single, then won the game on a C of I throwing error.
Ellis was 3-for-4 with four RBI; Turner was 3-for-5 with three RBI; and Jodie Hoagland, Destiny Campbell, Alexis Macias, and Rowe all had two hits in the loss for the Yotes.
C of I returns to action tomorrow, meeting British Columbia and Carroll.
