LA GRANDE, Ore. –
Joey Nebeker led four College of Idaho players in double-figures with 18 points, as the Yotes canned 18 3-pointers in a season-opening 88-59 victory over the University of Victoria at the Quinn Classic.
Box Score The Yotes (1-0) hoisted 45 shots from beyond the arc in the victory – making 40-percent of their attempts on the night. The 18-for-45 evening was the second-most 3-pointers made and attempted in program history, behind an epic 22-for-46 night in the same tournament nine years ago, a 129-120 overtime win over Montana Western.
Unlike their slow start 24 hours earlier in an exhibition win over Langara, C of I left no doubt from the get-go, sprinting to a 20-4 lead in the opening five minutes. Both Nebeker and
Dominique Jordan canned two triples and
Aitor Zubizarreta drained another in the surge. The lead would build to 32-7 on a
Curtis Brever lay-up off a Nebeker steal, with the Yotes taking a 45-25 lead to the locker room.
C of I made 11 3-pointers in the second half, extending the lead to 68-30 with 14 minutes remaining on Jordan's fourth made triple.
Zubizarreta scored 17 points and recorded seven assists in the victory, with Jordan adding 14 points and five assists.
Jalyn Turner had 13 points off the bench for the Yotes, while
Spiros Tarlas scored four points and added a game-high 14 rebounds and three blocked shots in his C of I debut.
Justin Kinnear led the Vikes, who played the game as an exhibition, with 17 points, with Grant Sitton adding 12 points off the bench.
The Yotes open the home schedule Friday night, hosting the Taco Bell Shoot-Out, as Walla Walla University meets Northwest Indian College at 2:30 p.m. and C of I hosts Montana Western at 7 p.m.
