HELENA, Mont. – Jonathan Taylor lined a 35-yard free kick into the upper left corner of the goal in the 86th minute, lifting Carroll College past College of Idaho, 1-0, at Nelson Stadium.
The Saints (5-3-1, 3-1-1 CCC) used a big performance from keeper Conor Smith, who turned away an Admir Selimovic penalty kick in the 72nd minute.to keep the game scoreless, stopping three shots on goal by the Coyotes (5-2, 4-2) to record the shutout.
C of I got their penalty kick after a foul in the box on a long run by Joe Bolin. However, Smith guessed left and smothered the low shot by Selimovic - the best chance of the match for the Yotes.
Taylor won it late after a foul was called 10 yards off the right sideline - toe-punching a low knuckling laser that soared just above the reach of C of I keeper Grant Billings.
Carroll had an 11-5 edge in total shots and recorded nine of the 11 corner kicks on the afternoon.
The Yotes return to action tomorrow, traveling to Great Falls at 1:30 p.m.
