HAVRE, Mont. - College of Idaho ended a four-game losing streak in a big way, piling up 495 yards of total offense in a 48-17 victory at Montana State-Northern inside Blue Pony Stadium.
A.J. Martin rushed for four touchdowns, Kyle Merritt and Zach Garzoli each ran for 98 yards - as C of I (2-4, 2-3 Frontier) racked up 259 yards of rushing offense in their highest-scoring output since a 67-0 win over Whitman in 1961.
The Yotes jumped out to a quick 17-0 first quarter lead - as Martin scored on touchdown runs of three and 12 yards - and Hartvig Bondo connected on a 27-yard field goal.
C of I got a Marzett Davis 42-yard return on the opening kickoff and were added by a personal foul penalty to start their opening drive at the MSU-N (0-6, 0-5) 35-yard line. Â A 15-yard scamper by Garzoli got the Yotes in the red zone, with Martin plowing in for the early lead.
A big defensive play by Jordan Vielma on a 4th-and-1 run attempt got the Coyotes the ball on the MSU-N side of the field, with a Garzoli 20-yard run setting up Bondo's field goal, while after a Northern three-and-out, a pair of Teejay Gordon to Austin Diffey passes set up Martin's second score.
The Lights got on the board early in the second quarter on a Jess Krahn 15-yard touchdown pass to Mario Gobbato, but C of I answered, marching 87 yards in eight plays - as a Gordon to Tyler Higby 44-yard pass set up a five-yard touchdown run by Martin.
C of I put the game away in the second half, as a Gordon to Ringo Robinson touchdown five-yard touchdown pass, a Martin six-yard scoring run, and a Colby Brown 16-yard scamper capped the big win.
Gordon was 19-of-29 for 206 yards in the victory for C of I, with Austin Diffey making eight receptions for 99 yards. Â Bondo was 6-of-6 on extra points and added a second field goal - setting a school record for kick scoring in a game. Â Defensively, Carlos Murana recorded four tackles for loss, including two sacks, with Cory Brady picking off a Northern pass and Hunter Temple recovering a fumble.
MSU-N was held to just 86 yards on the ground, with Zach McKinley rushing 21 times for 81 yards and a third quarter touchdown. Â Krahn finished 16-of-38 for 247 yards and a score.
The Yotes return to action next Saturday, hosting Rocky Mountain at 1 p.m.
