SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - A phenomenal defensive effort again helped the College of Idaho run their women's soccer unbeaten streak to four, as the Lady Yotes played Westminster College to a 1-1 draw at Dumke Field.
Despite recording just three shots on the afternoon, freshman keeper Brittany Houghton turned away 11 shots by the Griffins, including a penalty kick, to allow the Yotes (3-1-1) to escape with a point.
"This is one of the more difficult places to play a college soccer game," said head coach Brian Smith. "Westminster has a really good squad, pair that with the unique, fast surface and it makes for a difficult environment. Â I'm really proud of our girls to come on the road for our first time this season and get four points; it's pretty massive."
Jessica Whitehead got things off to a quick start for C of I as she flew by her defender, scoring her first goal of the season in the fourth minute on a shot that found the back of the net after being deflected by a Westminster defender. The Lady Yotes goal was the first goal Westminster had allowed all season, entering the game with a goal differential of 8-0 through the first four games.
The Whitehead goal would be the only shot the Lady Yotes would get in the first half, but still went into the break with a 1-0 lead.
The second half would prove to be much of the same story as the first; tons of opportunities for the Griffins (4-0-1), and fantastic defense from the Lady Yotes.
Westminster finally got the equalizer in the 69th minute as a C of I defender headed the ball into her own goal. The Griffins had an opportunity in the 80th minute to send home a potential game winner off a penalty kick, but Houghton saved the shot along with a flurry of shots coming off the rebound.
Both teams had chances in extra time, but could not score the golden goal.
Sydney Woods led the C of I with two shots, the other shot coming off the Whitehead goal.
The Lady Yotes were outshot on the game 26-3, with half the Westminster shots on goal.
The Lady Yotes will be back in action next weekend when they travel down to California for a duo of games versus Marymount University and Soka.
