Yotes Win Physical 1-0 Decision Over Division II Dominican

Box Score

CALDWELL, Idaho – Nate Hunt buried a penalty kick in the 81st minute for the only goal of the contest, as the College of Idaho closed non-conference play with a physical 1-0 victory over Dominican University at Simplot Stadium.

The Coyotes (3-1), off to their best start since the 2003 season, withstood a game marred by 33 fouls and nine yellow cards.

C of I dominated possession throughout against the Division II Penguins (0-4-1), but could not find the net in the opening 45 minutes.  A hand ball in the box gave the Coyotes a chance in the 31st minute, but DU keeper Erik Anderson guessed correctly on Joao Cardoso's penalty kick, making a diving save to keep the match scoreless.

In the second half, the Yotes countered in the 51st minute, as a through-ball found Hunt, who crossed a ball to the top of the six yard box to Joe Bolin, but his low drive clanged off the left post.  Six minutes later, Bolin unleashed a drive from the 18 that ricocheted off the crossbar.

The Penguins had their best chance of the afternoon in the 67 minute, with a left-footed one-timer from Alex Herrera missed just high and left of the frame.

After a flurry in the 81st minute, a foul in the box gave C of I a second penalty kick, with Hunt driving a ball into the right corner of the net for the winning tally.

C of I held a 14-9 edge in total shots – with the Yotes recording a 3-2 edge in shots on goal.  John French made two first half saves, combining with Grant Billings for the squad's second shutout win of 2014.

The Coyotes open Cascade Conference play on Tuesday, hosting Evergreen at 4 p.m.
