Box Score 2 PORTLAND, Ore. – Mitch Skaggs lined a go-ahead RBI single in the eighth inning of Game 1, helping the College of Idaho to a series opening doubleheader split against Concordia University at Porter Park.
Taylor Nicholson and Mitch Viydo kept the Cavaliers (20-18, 10-12 NAIA West) at bay in the 2-1 victory, but CU evened the four-game series at a game apiece behind a 12-strikeout performance from Harrison McGhee in a 7-2 victory.
Nicholson worked around seven hits and three walks to pick up his fifth win – allowing only a second inning Mike Egami RBI single.
The Yotes (23-15, 14-8) evened the game in the fourth on a two-out RBI single from Jake Hennessey, then took the lead on Skaggs' RBI knock in the eighth. The Cavs had the tying and go-ahead runs aboard in the ninth inning, but Viydo got Christian Lichtenthale to hit into a fielders' choice to end the game.
Six different C of I hitters had one hit apiece, with Lichtenthale going 2-for-3 for CU – with starter Jason Snodgrass striking out nine in the loss.
Game 2 was all Concordia, as the Cavs scored four first inning runs – two on an Egami RBI double – as the hosts built a 7-0 lead in the fifth.
The Coyotes got on the board in the sixth inning, as Skaggs lined a two-run single, but McGhee kept C of I's bats in check. The righty allowed just six hits and did not walk a batter in the victory.
Skaggs and Brady Mooney each had two hits for the Yotes, with Zach Fabricius taking the loss on the mound. Ian Erickson and Blake Evetts each had three hits in the win for CU.
The two teams close out the series tomorrow with an 11 a.m. doubleheader.
