Box Score 2 CALDWELL, Idaho – Ashley Van Horne went 4-for-6 with three RBI and Nickayla Skinner pitched back-to-back complete games, helping the College of Idaho to 8-0 and 8-2 wins over Southern Oregon at Symms Field.
The No. 24 ranked Lady Yotes (21-11, 13-7 CCC) avenged a pair of losses to SOU last month and improved to 7-3 on their 12-game home stand.
C of I took advantage of three second inning Raiders (10-12, 9-5) errors to plate five unearned runs. A one-out double play ball was bobbled by SOU shortstop Alexa Gonzalez to put runners at first and second. McKensie Stanton followed with a sharp grounder to short, but Gonzalez's throw to third to try and nab the lead runner ended up in the Yotes dugout, allowing a run to score. After the second out of the inning was recorded at home plate, C of I caught a break when Paige Gabiola reached on a dropped ball at first after a routine roller to the circle – allowing a run to score. Briana Brace hit the next pitch off the left field wall to plate a pair, with Van Horne roping an RBI triple of the right field fence.
The Yotes added three runs in the fourth – as Van Horne doubled home a run, a three-base SOU error plated a second, and a Destiny Turner RBI ground out made it 8-0.
Skinner did the rest, limiting Southern to two singles, a walk, and two hit-by-pitches, picking up her 27th career shutout. The righty had seven strikeouts and did not allow a Raider to reach third base. Skinner, along with Van Horne and Turner each had two hits in the victory.
The Coyotes struck first in Game 2, as Katie Rowe lined a solo homer in the second to give the hosts a 1-0 lead. C of I extended their lead to 4-0 in the third, stringing together four-straight singles, including an RBI single from Skinner and a two-run knock from Rowe.
Van Horne added an RBI single and Turner an RBI double in the fifth to make it 6-0, before Southern scratched across a run in the sixth on a Katie Rowe double. C of I answered in the bottom of the inning, plating a run on a single by Kendall Pavey and another on a Skinner sacrifice fly.
Skinner allowed six hits and struck out six in the win – with the Yote offense recording 14 hits. Brace, Van Horne, Turner, Rowe, and Alexis Macias all had two hits for C of I. Sierra Anderson was 2-for-3 in the loss for SOU.
The Lady Yotes return to action tomorrow morning, hosting No. 16 Oregon Tech at 11 a.m. Between games, the nine C of I senior student-athletes will be honored in a ceremony.
