CALDWELL, Idaho – A pair of five-run innings lifted the College of Idaho to a doubleheader sweep of Oregon Tech, winning 6-2 and 7-3, at Wolfe Field.
The Coyotes (11-7, 2-0 NAIA West) opened league play by rallying for a win in Game 1, then turned four double plays in Game 2 to extend their win streak to four games.
OIT (5-15, 0-2) took an early 1-0 lead in the first in the opener, as Aaron Bocchi blooped a two-out single to score Tyson Dahl from second. The Yotes answered in the sixth inning, as Mitch Skaggs singled home a run to tie the score, with Cole Mansanerez roping a pinch-hit three-run double to break the tie. Troy Carr capped the five-run outburst with a flare into center to score Mansanerez.
The two teams traded unearned runs – C of I plating one in the seven on a fielding error, Tech scoring a run on a Dahl RBI single in the eighth. With the tying run on deck, Brady Winfield came in and retired all four men he faced to earn the save.
Taylor Nicholson was solid in earning the win, going seven and two-thirds innings, allowing just one earned run on seven hits, striking out five. Skaggs, Mansanerez, and Chase Miller all had two hits in the win for the Yotes.
Dahl was 2-for-4 in the loss for OIT, with starter Austin Taylor allowing four earned runs in six-plus innings of work.
Both teams plated runs in the opening inning of Game 2 – as Bocchi blooped a two-out RBI single, followed by an RBI double by Ethan Schelecht. C of I responded in the bottom of the frame, as Mansanerez lined a two-run double to tie the score.
OIT gained the lead in the third, as Bocchi lined an RBI double to center field, but the lead was short-lived, as the Yotes batted around for five runs in the fourth. C of I loaded the bases with no outs, with Sam Johnston tying the score with an RBI single, and Brady Mooney breaking the deadlock with a bases-loaded walk. Miller roped an RBI single through the right side to plate two, with a Brent Mehling sacrifice fly making it 7-3.
Three C of I relievers kept Tech at bay, as Kyle Garvin, Ryan Eddy, and Nick Muncy combined for five and two-thirds innings of scoreless relief – being helped by four double play balls turned by the Yote defense. Garvin got the win, retiring all five men he faced.
Muncy and Mooney each had two hits for the Yotes, while Bocchi, Schlecht, Ryan Grant, and Ryan Hayden all had two hits for OIT.
The two teams will complete the NAIA West four-game series tomorrow at 11 a.m. with a pair of nine-inning games.
