CALDWELL, Idaho – College of Idaho pitchers combined to allow just three runs all afternoon, as the Coyotes got timely hitting to sweep a doubleheader from the University of Antelope Valley, 3-2 and 9-1, at rainy Wolfe Field.
Mitch Viydo allowed just one run and fanned six in six-plus innings in Game 1, improving to 2-0 on the season. C of I took their first lead of the series in the third, as Mitch Skaggs plated Nick Muncy with a sacrifice fly. The Pioneers (13-10-1) evened the score in the fifth on a two-out bloop single from Wheylan Price.
The Yotes (9-7) answered in the sixth, as with runners at second and third, Brent Mehling hit a slow grounder to short that scored Chase Miller to give C of I a 2-1 lead. The lead would be extended to 3-1 in the seventh, as Muncy delivered a two-strike squeeze bunt that scored Brady Mooney.
Kyle Garvin allowed an RBI single to Steven Tremlin in the eighth, but stranded the tying runner at third – then worked a 1-2-3 ninth to lock down his third save. Mooney had the lone multi-hit game for C of I, going 2-for-3.
Game 2 was dominated by the Coyote arms – as Zach Fabricius went six innings of five hit ball for the win. His lone mistake was a long solo homer in the third by UAV's Juan Reveles to give the Pioneers a 1-0 lead.
C of I got the offense going in the fourth, as freshman Troy Carr lined a two-strike, two-run single up the middle to give the Yotes a 2-1 lead. Following a Muncy double, a wild pitch scored Carr, with Sam Johnston adding a bloop RBI single to make it 4-1.
The Yotes would put the game away in the fifth, as Mehling laced a two-run single and Carr followed with an RBI base hit to make it 7-1.
Ryan Eddy threw three shutout innings of relief, striking out four, to pick up the save. Carr and Johnston each had two hits for the Yotes.
C of I opens up NAIA West play next weekend, hosting Oregon Tech in a four-game series, beginning Saturday.
