Yotes Sweep Biola, Best Start Since 2006

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

LA MIRADA, Calif. - Four pitchers combined to allow just two runs on the afternoon, as The College of Idaho swept a doubleheader from Biola University, winning 5-0 and 3-2, at Eagle Diamond.

The wins for the Coyotes (4-0) completed a perfect road trip to California and helped C of I to their best start since the 2006 season - when the squad opened with eight-straight victories.

Ryan Eddy and Markus Lively combined on a six-hit shutout in the opener - while benefiting from three timely RBI doubles.

C of I took the lead in the third inning, when Chase Miller lined an RBI double into the left field corner, scoring Brady Mooney. It would stay that way until the seventh, when Gregg Simonds and Sam Johnston laced back-to-back two-out doubles to make it 2-0. The Yotes would cap the scoring in the eighth, loading the bases without a hit - with Mitch Skaggs clearing the bases with a three-run double.

Eddy stranded runners in scoring position in the first, third, and fourth - taking advantage of a pair of double plays behind him. The senior allowed just five hits and struck out three for the win. Lively worked out of a bases loaded jam in the seventh, allowing just one hit to earn the save.

Game 2 saw the Yotes break a 2-2 tie in the sixth with a manufactured run. Jordan Grubbs led off with a single, moved to second on a ground out, and stole third. He then scored on a Johnston fielders choice - beating the throw home to give C of I the lead. Kyle Garvin retired six of the final seven batters to lock down the win.

The Yotes struck first in the opening inning, as a pair of walks, a sacrifice bunt, and a Skaggs ground out brought in the first run of the game. The Eagles (3-7) answered, stringing together three hits in the second off Mitch Viydo, to tie the score, taking the lead in the fourth on a two-out Ben Klocek RBI double. C of I evened the score in the fifth on a two-out Miller RBI single.

Garvin, who worked out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the fifth, allowed just two hits and struck out four for the Yotes - who were limited to just three hits. Viydo tossed four innings of six-hit ball in his C of I debut.

The Coyotes return to action this weekend, traveling to Lewiston, for the Guardian Heating and Plumbing NAIA West Icebreaker.
