CALDWELL, Idaho - Chase Miller went a combined 4-for-10 with three runs scored, leading The College of Idaho to a doubleheader split with Whitworth University at Wolfe Field.
The Yotes (6-5) dropped Game 1, 6-3, before rallying for a 7-3 victory in the nightcap.
Game 1 saw the Pirates (3-4) chase C of I starter Ryan Eddy after just two innings - taking advantage of three walks and two hit-by-pitches to build a 5-0 lead. Josh Davis singled home a pair of runs in the first, with Chad Pfeffer doubling home two in the second.
WU starter Cory Mack kept the Yotes off-balance, allowing two runs on three hits and striking out five in six innings of work for the win. Down 6-2 in the seventh, Miller started a rally with a one-out single and scored on a Jordan Grubbs fielders' choice, but C of I stranded a pair of runners and did not threaten the rest of the way.
The Bucs had 12 hits in the win, while Miller had the lone multi-hit game for C of I. Brady Winfield was solid in relief, going seven strong innings, allowing just one earned run.
Game 2 was a pitchers' duel between Spencer Ansett and Markus Lively - as the two teams put up zeros for the first four innings. WU broke through in the top of the fifth, taking advantage of a pair of Coyote miscues to load the bases. RBI singles from Nate Lamberty and Nick Motsinger, and a Garrett Hughes RBI fielders' choice helped the Bucs to a 3-0 lead.
C of I got a run back in the fifth as Zach Fabricius led off with a double and scored on a Grubbs sacrifice fly, while an inning later, the Yotes took the lead. A Sam Johnston sacrifice fly made it 3-2, while a errant pickoff move allowed Seth Champlin to score the tying run. Fabricius followed with a sacrifice fly to give the Coyotes a 4-3 lead. Miller helped up the game away in the eighth, rapping a two-run single.
Lively grinded out six innings of four-hit ball for the win, striking out six. Kyle Garvin retired nine of the 10 men he faced, striking out two, to pick up the nine-out save. Miller, Mitch Skaggs, Cole Mansanerez, and Brent Mehling each had two hits for C of I.
The two teams close out the four-game series with a single Sunday game, beginning at 11 a.m.
