PORTLAND, Ore. – Quality outings by both Concordia and George Fox pitchers' helped the Cavaliers and Bruins to wins over The College of Idaho, this afternoon at Porter Park.
CU earned a 7-3 victory in the opener, while GFU blanked the Yotes in the afternoon game, 4-0.
In Game 1, the Coyotes (4-4) dug themselves an early hole, as CU rapped out five first inning hits, including run-scoring singles by Christian Lichtenthaler, Cole Baruse, and Ian Erickson, as the Cavaliers (3-1) jumped to a 4-0 lead.
C of I chipped away at the deficit, getting a Gregg Simonds sacrifice fly and a Nick Muncy RBI single in the fourth to make it 4-2, with Simonds adding an RBI single in the sixth to make it 4-3. However, the Yotes stranded the tying run at second base and did not get another runner in scoring position the rest of the way.
CU got three insurance runs in the eighth – as Trent Calmer and Blake Drake lined RBI doubles, and Lichtenthaler followed with an RBI triple to make it 7-3.
Harrison McGehee got the win for the Cavs, striking out six in five innings of work, with Austin Hadley striking out five in four innings for the save. Drake went 3-for-5 and Erickson added three hits for CU.
Ryan Eddy took the loss for the Yotes, striking out five in five innings, but surrendering four runs on seven hits. Mitch Skaggs and Jake Hennessey each had two hits for C of I.
In Game 2, Tom Zarosinski and two relievers combined on a three-hit shutout, handcuffing the Coyote bats.
Zaroskinski went eight innings, allowing just two hits, and striking out eight to earn the win. C of I loaded the bases in the ninth inning, but Sean Eberhardt coaxed a game-ending double play ball to log the save.
GFU (5-1) took the lead in the first, as Josh Rapacy drilled a solo homer down the left field line. The Bruins added to the lead in the fourth, as Ian Skiles lined a two-run single, with a Danny Clifford sacrifice fly in the fifth making it 4-0.
Markus Lively took the loss for the Coyotes, allowing four runs on nine hits in four-plus innings of work. Mitch Viydo was solid in relief, allowing just two hits in three and two-thirds innings.
C of I opens up their home schedule next weekend, hosting Whitworth in a four-game series, beginning Friday afternoon.
