CALDWELL, Idaho – Erica Martinez scored a game-high 25 points, including a pair of baskets in a game-changing 13-1 first half run, as The College of Idaho stopped Corban University, 73-56, inside the J.A. Albertson Activities Center.
The win for the Lady Yotes (8-8, 5-3 CCC) pulled the team into a three-way tie for third-place in the loop standings, ending the Warriors three-game win streak.
C of I never trailed in the game, jumping out to a quick 7-1 lead. Corban (11-9, 6-2) clawed within 23-19 on an Olivia Erskine baseline jumper – but did not convert another field goal for over five minutes. Martinez started the Coyote run with a driving lay-up that turned into a three-point play, with Chakala Carthen spinning in a left-handed lay-up while being fouled – as her three-point play made it 29-20. Dayna Drager and Martinez canned back-to-back treys, and a Carthen freebie gave the Yotes a 16-point lead.
The Warriors would cut the margin to 10 early in the second half at 44-34, but an Aleah Lowber three-pointer keyed an eight-point C of I surge to extend the lead to 18. Corban would make one final push, getting within 63-53 on a pair of Katherine Salness free throws with just under five minutes to go, but a Lowber three-point play as the shot clock expired capped a 10-0 Lady Yote run that put the game out of reach.
Martinez hit four three-pointers and made 9-of-13 shots overall in the victory, with Carthen logging her tenth double-double of the season, scoring 15 points and adding 11 rebounds. Drager had 13 points, five rebounds, and five assists, with Lowber scoring all 10 of her points after halftime.
Jade Lowery led the Warriors with 17 points and post Tara VanWeerdhuizen had 14 points and eight rebounds. Corban finished the game with 21 turnovers.
C of I returns to action tomorrow night, hosting Northwest Christian at 5:30 p.m.
