CALDWELL, Idaho - Seth Haehl and Sal Arena combined on a five-hit shutout, as Lewis-Clark State won the final game of the 2013 "Gem State World Series," topping The College of Idaho, 13-0, at Wolfe Field.
Haehl went six strong innings in his first start of the season, allowing just three hits and striking out three, to pick up his first win of the season. Arena allowed just two base runners in three innings of relief to pick up his fourth save, as the Warriors (27-8, 13-3 NAIA West) won the weekend set, three games to one.
L-C jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the opening inning, as Brady Steiger tripled home a run with a drive into the right-center gap, followed by a Cody Lavalli RBI single. The Warriors tallied a run in the second on an error by the Coyotes (17-15, 8-8), making it 4-0 in the fifth on a Ryan Sells RBI single.
The visitors broke the game open with a seven-run ninth inning - including a two-run Jake Shirley single and a Lavalli two-run double.
Lavalli went 4-for-5 with three RBI, while Shirley and Steiger each had three hits in the win for L-C.
Parker Vernon went 2-for-3 for the Yotes, who had just one runner reach third base in the game. Starter Ryan Eddy went six innings, allowing just three earned runs and struck out five - ending a personal six-game win streak.
The C of I returns to action next weekend with a four-game series at Oregon Tech.
