PORTLAND, Ore. – Nickayla Skinner became The College of Idaho all-time leader in wins and shutouts and Cortni Pena added a three-hit shutout of her own, as the Lady Yotes swept a doubleheader with Northwest University by identical 6-0 scores.
Skinner allowed four singles and did not walk a batter in the Game 1 win. The junior struck out 11 – recording her 15th career shutout and her 43rd career victory, surpassing the previous records set by All-American Katie Zillner from 2006-09.
The Lady Yotes (17-15, 5-7 CCC) took a 2-0 lead in the second on a two-run Ashley Van Horne home run, adding three runs in the third – getting an RBI single from Julia Henrie and a two-run Rachael Strong single. The C of I capped the scoring in the sixth, as Molly Mills scored on a wild pitch.
Henrie, Van Horne, and Alexis Macias each had two hits in the win against the first-year Eagles (4-22, 2-12). Hannah Ganfield went 2-for-3 in the loss for NU.
Game 2 was dominated by Pena, who struck out a career-high nine in the victory. The freshman retired the first 11 batters of the game and allowed just one runner to reach third base.
The C of I gave the right-hander all the run support she needed in the first, as Henrie plated a run with a fielders’ choice, with Anna Denn rapping a two-run single. Strong would make it 5-0 in the second with a two-run single, with the Yotes adding an unearned run on an Eagle error in the third.
Strong, Denn, and Mills each had two hits for the Yotes – who have recorded eight shutout wins this season. Three different NU players had one hit in the loss.
The Yotes return to action on Monday, opening a four-game series at British Columbia.
