Yotes Split Saturday Doubleheader in Canada

VANCOUVER, B.C. - Ryan Eddy and Parker Vernon combined on a six-hit shutout in the opener, as The College of Idaho and the University of British Columbia split a key NAIA West Grouping doubleheader at Thunderbird Park.

The Coyotes (16-10, 7-3) won Game 1, 3-0, before UBC used a seven-run fourth inning to win Game 2, 9-0.

Eddy was masterful in picking up his sixth-straight victory, retiring the first 10 men he faced in order - limiting only two Thunderbirds (13-9, 7-3) to reach third base in the game.  The right-hander walked three and struck out six in the win, while Vernon got the final three outs for his third save.

The C of I jumped on the board in the first, as Seth Champlin walked, stole second, and scored on a UBC fielding error.  The Yotes made it 3-0 in the second - scoring a run on a Champlin infield single and another on a Jarel Lewis bases loaded walk.  T-Bird pitchers worked out of trouble all afternoon, as the Yotes hit into a pair of double plays and stranded 11 men.

Champlin and Jake Hennessey each had two hits in the win for the Coyotes.

Game 2 was dominated by UBC - as the T-Birds limited the Yotes to just one hit, a fourth inning Nick Muncy single.  Jeremy Newton went seven shutout innings for the win, with Tavis Bruce retiring all six men he faced to close out the victory.

The hosts took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a Mike Hole RBI double, then batted around for seven runs in the fourth - including an RBI triple from Austin Fruson, a Tyler Enns RBI double, and RBI singles from Kevin Biro and Tyson Popoff.

The two teams close out the series with an 11 a.m. doubleheader on Sunday.
