Lady Yotes Blanked at Concordia

Molly Mills had four hits in the doubleheader loss to Concordia
PORTLAND, Ore. - Ashley Suter and Danielle Orvella each tossed shutouts, as Concordia University became the first team since 2009 to keep The College of Idaho from scoring a run in a twinbill, as the Cavs swept a key Cascade Conference doubleheader at Delta Park.

Concordia (22-9, 8-4 CCC) used a two-run homer by Kate Santos in Game 1 to earn a 2-0 win, then used a three-run first inning to top the Yotes (15-15, 3-7) in Game 2, 5-0.  It marked the first time since an April 2009 doubleheader against Seattle University that The C of I failed tally a run.

The Lady Yotes had chances in Game 1 to take the lead - putting runners at second and third with one out in the third and runners at first and second with two outs in the fifth, but could not get the clutch hit.  CU did get the key hit in the fifth, as Tobey Varney led off with a single and one out later, Santos slugged her 12th homer of the year - providing the only runs.

The C of I had the tying runs aboard in the sixth, but Suter worked out of the jam - limiting the Yotes to six hits, while striking out six, to pick up her 11th win.  Varney, Santos, and Laura Luther each had two hits for CU.

Nickayla Skinner was the tough-luck loser, as the Yotes lost for the first time this year when allowing two or fewer runs.  Molly Mills went 2-for-4 for The C of I.

Game 2 was more of the same for the Yotes, loading the bases with two outs in the first but could not score - as the team was 1-for-12 with runners in scoring position on the afternoon.  CU responded in the bottom half - as Taylor Copher doubled home a pair of runs and Cassidy Horner added an RBI single to give CU a 3-0 lead.  The Cavs would make it 5-0 in the third, as Robin Gawlista and Katie Aden rapped back to back RBI singles.

Orvella worked out of trouble all afternoon to log the win - stranding C of I runners in scoring position in the second, third, sixth, and seventh innings - walking one batter and striking out six.  Copher, Horner, and Jennifer Lutton each had two hits for CU.

Cortni Pena allowed eight hits, walked three, and fanned two in the loss for the Yotes, with Mills, Ashley Van Horne, and Julia Henrie each recording two hits.

The Yotes return to action tomorrow, meeting Northwest University (also at Delta Park) at 11 a.m.
