OLYMPIA, Wash. – Erica Martinez canned a pair of three-pointers in a 17-4 second half run, helping The College of Idaho outlast The Evergreen State College, 61-58, inside the CRC Gymnasium.
The Geoducks (4-4, 0-2 CCC) built a 39-31 lead early in the second half, but C of I responded with four three-pointers in three minute stretch to take the lead for good. Elisha Hensey started the rally with a trey, with Martinez and Chakala Carthen canning back-to-back three's. Carthen hit a jumper, Dayna Drager added a three-point play, and Martinez splashed another triple, giving the Yotes (4-5, 1-1) a 48-43 lead.
Evergreen would get within 53-52 on LaNiece Witherspoon three-point play with six minutes left, but Martinez answered with a three-point play of her own, as C of I kept the Greeners at bay.
The two teams played an even first half – playing to seven ties before ESC took a 27-25 lead to the locker room. A Jessica Denmon three and a Sadee Jones jumper extended the lead to eight, before the Yotes made their charge.
Martinez led all scorers with 23 points, including 5-of-8 shooting from outside the arc. Carthen added 13 points and eight rebounds, with Drager adding 10 points. C of I made nine three-pointers – the sixth-straight game with at least eight three's in a game.
Denmon led ESC with 22 points – including all five made three's for the Geoducks, with Jones adding 10 points in the loss.
The Lady Yotes return to action next weekend, hosting Westminster on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m.
