Late Rally Falls Short in 71-65 loss at #5 Westminster

Box Score

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - Kelsi Wells scored 17 points, including a three-pointer in a key 15-0 Westminster College run, as the No. 5 ranked Griffins held off a late College of Idaho rally, defeating the Lady Yotes 71-65 inside Behnken Fieldhouse.

Leading 32-30 at the break, the Griffins (2-0) saw the visitors take their only lead of the game at 40-38 on an Aleah Lowber lay-up with just under 16 minutes remaining. Westminster responded, as Wells and Amy Krommenhoek each hit three's in the run, as the Griffins extended the margin to 53-40 with just under 12 minutes to play.

The margin was 66-54 with four minutes remaining when the Yotes (0-3) made a late surge - getting back-to-back Erica Martinez three-pointers and a three-point play from Elisha Hensey to cut the lead to 65-62 with a minute to go. However, Allie Blake canned a jumper with 26 seconds left to extend the Westminster lead to five and the hosts held on.

Blake had 14 points in the win for the Griffins, while Alli Winters made 4-of-5 three-pointers, part of her 12 point night.

Chakala Carthen had her third-straight double-double for C of I, scoring 20 points and adding 10 rebounds - despite playing just 19 minutes due to foul trouble. Martinez had 17 points and Lowber scored 13, with Hensey tying a school record with 11 assists, adding 11 points and eight rebounds. The Yotes were a perfect 14-for-14 from the foul line.
