CALDWELL, Idaho – Jessica Martinez scored seven of her team-high 17 points in a 22-0 first half run, as The College of Idaho claimed the title of the 14th Annual Best Western Caldwell Inn and Suites Lady Yote Classic with a 89-52 victory over Walla Walla University.
The win for the Lady Yotes (3-4) was their third in a row heading into Cascade Conference play – as C of I claimed their eighth Lady Yote Classic title.
The Wolves (0-12), who suited just five players due to injury, stayed closer early on thanks to a pair of three-pointers from Michaela Garcia – squaring the contest at 8-8 at the 16:35 mark. However, the Yotes held WWU without a made field goal for a nine minute stretch – taking a 35-20 lead at the break.
C of I put the game away with a 15-2 run to open the second half, as Martinez had a three-point play and drained a three-pointer, with Elisha Hensey canning a pair of treys in the run. The Lady Yotes led by as many as 41 points in the victory.
Martinez added 10 assists and six rebounds in the win, with Hensey adding 11 points, five rebounds, and seven assists, and Chakala Carthen scoring 10 points and grabbing 10 boards. Twelve different C of I players scored in the victory as the team recorded 31 assists on 36 made field goals.
Garcia led the NAIA Division II independent Wolves with 20 points, with Karly Joseph adding 18 points.
C of I opens up CCC play on Friday night, traveling to Northwest University.
