DILLON, Mont. – Kaci Matthies scored five of her team-high 19 points in a 9-0 second half run to break open a close game, leading Montana Western past The College of Idaho, 65-56, inside Straugh Gymnasium.
Western (4-0) saw an 11-point second half lead trimmed to 44-41 on a Chakala Carthen free throw with just over 11 minutes to go, but Matthies hit a free throw and two jumpers and McCall Hasquet added a pair of baskets, as the Bulldogs grabbed their biggest lead of the night to defeat the Yotes (0-1).
The first half featured five ties, before UMW rattled off eight-straight points to break a 19-19 tie and led 30-24 at the break.
Matthies added nine rebounds in the victory, with Sammi Bignell adding 17 points and eight rebounds, and Roxy Thurman scored 12.
Erica Martinez led the Yotes with 19 points in her C of I debut, with transfer Elisha Hensey adding 16 points in the loss. Carthen had 12 points and a game-high 14 rebounds for the Lady Yotes, who made 45-percent of their field goal chances, but committed 20 turnovers.
C of I continues their road trip tomorrow, meeting Carroll College at 6 p. m.
