Lady Yotes Play No. 22 Carroll to 1-1 Draw

CALDWELL, Idaho - A stellar defensive effort against the No. 22 ranked team in the NAIA helped The College of Idaho open their home schedule with a 1-1 draw against Carroll College, in Game 1 of the Coyote Classic at Simplot Stadium.

Box Score

The Lady Yotes (0-3-1) controlled the first 45 minutes of the game, including a 9-4 edge in first half shots.  Shea Yuma nearly got the hosts on the board in the 27th minute, cracking a 20-yard shot just outside the box off the top of the crossbar, while Sarah Hicks had a 1-on-1 chance with Carroll keeper Erin Volz, but was turned away in the 32nd minute.

The C of I got on the board five minutes later, as Yuma made a great runner down the right side, crossing a ball for Hicks at the far post, but in an attempt to clear the ball, a Saints (6-0-1) defender knocked the ball into her own net for the opening goal.

The Yotes nearly made it 2-0 10 minutes into the second half, as Hicks made a great run down the left side, but her left-footed shot from 10-yards out was stopped by Volz.

Carroll took command of the match over the final 30 minutes of the period - as Kayle Bayer clanged a shot off the crossbar in the 67th minute, while a Laura Maddock blast from 25-yards missed just high.  The Saints would get the equalizer in the 78th minute, as Macie Netz placed a perfect corner kick over the defense to the top of the six-yard box, finding the waiting foot of Madi O'Dell.

The Montana school continued their assault on the Coyote goal, as a Christa Saur shot in the 80th minute was clearned off the goal line by Amanda Boyce, while in the first overtime, O'Dell banged a pair of shots off the crossbar and Netz headed a corner just wide in the 98th minute.  Carroll would have one final chance in the 106th minute, but a Netz shot off a corner was redirected over the cage by keeper Melissa Holmes-Joseph.

Volz made eight saves in the draw for Carroll, as the Saints held a 20-14 edge in total shots, though the Lady Yotes had a 9-6 edge in shots on the frame.  Holmes-Joseph had four saves - all from point-blank range for the Yotes.  Netz led the Saints with six shots, while Hicks had four shots - all on goal, for the Yotes.

Tomorrow, Carroll will meet Eastern Oregon in Game 2 of the tournament at 2 p.m., while the Lady Yotes return to the pitch to meet EOU on Sunday at 1 p.m.
