KIRKLAND, Wash. - Jessica Oliver and Stephanie Cummins scored second half goals, as Northwest University recorded a key 2-0 victory over The College of Idaho this afternoon at the NU Athletic Field.
Box Score
The victory by the Eagles (6-8-2, 5-1-1 CCC) helped the squad pull into sole possession of second-place in the Cascade Conference standings heading into the final weekend of the season, while the Lady Yotes are forced into a pair of must-win games to have a chance to keep their string of six-straight playoff appearances alive.
The two sides played a fairly even first 45 minutes, with the Lady Yotes (5-6-1, 4-3) nearly getting on the board late in the half - but drives by McKenzie Anderson and Sydney Woods inside the final two minutes, but Patty Hughes made a pair of solid saves for the Eagles.
NU had a chance to take the lead in the 66th minute, as Lindsey Field headed a cross in the box that was blocked by Coyote keeper Melissa Holmes-Joseph, then making a diving save on Field's chance on a rebound.
The Yotes would not be so lucky in the 70th minute, as Acacia Johnson played a long ball to Field down the right side, crossing a ball to the waiting foot of Oliver just outside the six-yard box, who slotted home the game-winner. NU would add an insurance goal in the 76th minute, as off a Shea Samuelsen corner kick, Cummins flicked home the counter from the far post for the 2-0 lead.
The C of I would put pressure on the Eagles in the final 10 minutes, getting four shots on goal, but Hughes came up with a save each time, as NU won for the first-time ever against the Yotes.
NU held a 28-16 edge in total shots and a 10-9 edge in shots on goal, while the Eagles took eight of the nine corner kicks on the afternoon.
The Lady Yotes return home next weekend to close out the regular season with matches against Southern Oregon and Oregon Tech.
