Austin Basterrechea

AT COLLEGE OF IDAHO: Basterrechea is in his 12th season with the College of Idaho athletic department and recently finished his first year as an Assistant Athletic Director. In 2022-23, he was involved in fundraising over $500,000, the event management for the 2022-23 NAIA Men's Basketball Opening Round and the management of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. Prior to moving into administration, he spent his first 11 years with the Coyote track and field program and five as head coach of both the C of I cross country and track programs.

AS A HEAD COACH: Led both cross country teams to eight consecutive Top-15 finishes at the NAIA Championships - with the men's team placing as high as fourth in 2016; the women's team recording sixth-place finishes in 2016 and 2017; the women's team finishing as national runner-up in 2019 and 2020, with the men's and women's squad combining for the 2019 NAIA title. The men's team was in the top three as the Cascade Collegiate Conference Championships with conference titles in 2018, 2019 and 2021. The women won three-consecutive CCC titles form 2019-2021 and were in the top three each year since his arrival in 2015.

AS AN ASSISTANT: Joined the coaching staff in 2015 as the Yotes top assistant, helping the men's and women's cross country teams to Top-10 finishes at the NAIA Championships, with the women's track team winning fourth-straight Cascade Conference titles.  

HONORS: Basterrechea was named 2017, 2018 and 2021 CCC Women's Track & Field Coach of the Year, the 2018 CCC Men's Cross Country Coach of the Year, the 2019 CCC Men's and Women's Cross Country Coach of the Year and the 2020 CCC Women's Cross Country Coach of the Year. He has been honored by the USTFCCCA as West Region Coach of the Year on five occasions (Men's XC in 2018, Women's XC in 2020, Women's Indoor Track in 2021 and Women's Outdoor Track in 2018 and 2021). He has coached 10 NAIA All-Americans, 46 All-CCC selections, 68 Academic All-CCC selections, 34 NAIA Scholar-Athletes and a pair of NAIA national champions (Tiana Thomas, Molly Vitale-Sullivan).

PERSONAL: The native of Gooding is a 2014 graduate of the College, where he was a four-time NAIA All-American and four-time CCC champion; earned All-America honors indoors in the heptathlon in 2012 and 2014, while earning All-America honors outdoors in the decathlon in 2013 and 2014; was a two-time CCC decathlon champ, while also claiming titles in the long jump and 110-meter hurdles; a three-time CCC All-Academic Team selection, a two time NAIA Scholar-Athlete, and two-time first-team Capital One Academic All-American; competed in the 2011 USATF Junior Nationals.
