FULLERTON, Calif. — The College of Idaho volleyball team closed out its season-opening weekend with a pair of victories Saturday at the Hope International Summer Slam, defeating The Master's 3-1 before sweeping Simpson 3-0 to finish the weekend 4-0.
The Yotes rallied after dropping the opening set against The Master's, winning 21-25, 25-19, 25-20, 25-18. College of Idaho then closed the tournament with a dominant 25-16, 25-13, 25-18 sweep of Simpson at Darling Pavilion.
Against The Master's, College of Idaho hit .168 as a team and recorded 43 kills, while holding the Mustangs to a .087 attack percentage. The Yotes also controlled the net with 24 block assists and four solo blocks.
Alexa Wheeler led College of Idaho with 13 points, finishing with seven kills, two solo blocks and eight block assists. Keylee Wilson added 10 kills and 12 points, while Cierra Bohrn recorded seven kills and six block assists. Abigail Flerchinger and Jessica Stires contributed seven and eight kills, respectively.
Shaynee McWilliams directed the Yotes' offense with 32 assists and added 19 digs. Kadence Boyd led the defensive effort with 10 digs, while Avery Lewis finished with 17 digs.
College of Idaho took control early against Simpson, hitting .395 as a team and committing just seven attack errors on 81 attempts. The Yotes limited Simpson to a .101 hitting percentage and led wire-to-wire in the final two sets.
Abigail Flerchinger paced the offense with eight kills on 12 attacks without an error for a .667 hitting percentage. Kelsy Stanger and Addison McKarcher each added five kills, while Cora Young finished with three kills and five block assists.
Emma Krogh recorded 10 assists and two service aces, while Shaynee McWilliams added 11 assists. Kadence Boyd contributed four assists, three service aces and six digs. Avery Lewis also had four aces and six digs.
The Yotes opened the weekend with back-to-back wins Friday before extending their winning streak to four matches Saturday. College of Idaho will return to action Aug. 27-29 at the I-84 Classic in Nampa, Idaho, hosted at Northwest Nazarene University while construction continues at the JA Albertson Activities Center.
