Yotes Battle to Final Out, Drop 3-1 Decision

COLUMBUS, Ga. — The College of Idaho put together a late push but couldn't overcome a decisive fifth inning, falling 3-1 to second-seeded Southeastern at the NAIA World Series on Saturday.

The Yotes (38-21) outhit Southeastern 7-5 and kept pressure on throughout, but were limited to a single run despite multiple scoring opportunities.

College of Idaho threatened early as Kamryn Ham and Kina Watts each recorded singles in the first three innings, while Lena Zahniser added two hits on a perfect 2-for-2 day. The Yotes made quick work of getting on base, but stranded eight runners.

The game turned in the fifth when Southeastern capitalized for three runs, but the Yotes continued to battle behind starter Kina Watts, who struck out three over 4 1/3 innings. Drew Williams came in to close out the game in relief.

College of Idaho answered with its best rally in the seventh. Chloe Flerchinger opened the inning with a single, and pinch hitter Ysabella Villegas followed with another base hit. Ham then delivered her second hit of the day to load the bases. Marti Anderson brought home the Yotes' lone run with a sacrifice fly, cutting the deficit to 3-1, but Southeastern held on from there.

Zahniser also provided one of the game's defining moments defensively, laying out completely on a play at first base in a full-extension effort that underscored the Yotes' urgency and fight.

Ham led the Yotes offensively, going 2-for-4, while Zahniser added two hits and Watts contributed a hit in the loss.

College of Idaho will now face Our Lady of the Lake in an elimination game Sunday at 2:30 p.m. Eastern (12:30 p.m. Mountain), needing a win to keep its season alive.
