GLENDALE, Ariz. - College of Idaho split its second day of the season Friday, shutting out Hope International University 3-0 in the opener before falling 5-3 in the afternoon game at the ACU Softball Stadium.
In Game 1, Drew Williams threw a three-hit shutout with one strikeout and three walks, needing just 90 pitches to finish the complete-game win. The Yotes struck early when Kina Watts delivered a sacrifice fly in the first. Watts later doubled home an unearned run in the sixth, and Hallie Campbell followed with an RBI single to make it 3-0. College of Idaho finished with six hits while committing one error. Hope International managed three singles and left six runners on base.
In Game 2, Hope International answered with an 11-hit performance, scoring twice in the second, once in the third and adding two insurance runs in the sixth. Breanna Lucero drove in two runs, including a go-ahead RBI single in the sixth, and Vivian Little earned the complete-game win, striking out one and allowing five hits and four walks.
College of Idaho opened the scoring on a first-inning RBI single by Madelyn Powell and tied the game 3-3 in the fourth when Kam Ham hit a two-run triple. But the Yotes were held to one hit over the final three innings as Hope International's pitching closed it out. Grace Neer took the loss in relief, allowing only one earned run over 4 2/3 innings.
College of Idaho continues play Saturday in Mesa, Arizona.
