CALDWELL, Idaho – The College of Idaho women's soccer team is ready to defend their title as they enter the 2024 season with high expectations. After an incredible 2023 campaign, which saw the Yotes finish the regular season with a perfect 12-0-0 record and clinch the Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) tournament championship in a thrilling penalty shootout, they have been unanimously predicted to finish first in the upcoming season.
With 24 out of 29 lettermen returning, the Yotes are looking to build on their remarkable achievements from last year and further establish their dominance in the CCC. The confidence shown in the team by fellow conference members, reflected in the unanimous top ranking, speaks volumes about the talent and potential of this year's squad.
Key Returners
Leading the charge for the Yotes is Eden Makaafi, the Offensive Player of the Year and a first-team all-conference forward. Makaafi's scoring prowess and playmaking ability were instrumental in the team's success last season, and she is expected to continue her dominant performance on the field.
Joining her is Natasja Davis, another first-team all-conference forward whose speed and skill make her a constant threat to opposing defenses. The Yotes will also rely heavily on Larissa Wegner, a standout midfielder and first-team all-conference selection, whose vision and passing ability are crucial for connecting the team's attack.
On the defensive side, the Yotes welcome back Alexis Eiguren, a first-team all-conference defender and last season's Newcomer of the Year, as well as Isabel Deville, an honorable mention all-conference selection. Together, they will anchor a formidable backline that is key to the team's defensive success.
Key Losses
While the Yotes are set to return a wealth of talent, they will have to address the departure of a few key players. Hannah McFadden, last year's Defensive Player of the Year and a first-team All-American goalkeeper, leaves a significant gap in goal. Her leadership and shot-stopping ability were vital to the team's success, and finding a capable replacement will be essential.
Additionally, the Yotes will miss Chloe Teets, a second-team all-conference captain and center midfielder, along with Payton Mongelli, a solid defender, and Maddie Smith, a forward with an all-conference career. The leadership and experience of these players will be felt, but the returning squad is ready to step up and fill the void.
Key Newcomers
To bolster their lineup, the Yotes have added several promising newcomers. Ava Poyser, Campbell Reed, and Zoey Takeuchi will provide depth and versatility in defense, while Alivia Brenchley steps in as a goalkeeper. Their contributions will be crucial as the team looks to maintain their defensive prowess and adapt to the new season.
Looking Ahead
With their sights set on another CCC title and a deeper run in the postseason, the Yotes are ready to embrace the challenges ahead. Fans can expect a thrilling season filled with high-energy matches, skillful play, and a team that embodies the spirit of determination and excellence.
As they kick off the season, the College of Idaho women's soccer team is primed for success, aiming to continue their legacy of dominance in the Cascade Conference and beyond.
