College of Idaho Volleyball Rallies in Five to Take Down Northwest

KIRKLAND, Wash. – An energetic crowd filled the Kristi Brodin Pavilion for a second-straight night as College of Idaho came to town against a Northwest squad that had defeated No. 1 Eastern Oregon on Friday night.

College of Idaho (7-7, 5-1 CCC) entered the night on a four-match winning streak and determined to stretch it to five. The streak was in jeopardy was in jeopardy as Northwest won two tightly contested sets, 25-21 and 26-24 to begin the match. Northwest (7-5, 4-3 CCC) hit .241 and .128 in the first two sets for the early lead.

The comeback for the Yotes started in the third set as they hit .129 compared to -.094 for the host Eagles. With the third set tied at 13, College of Idaho went on a 7-1 run for a 20-14 lead on its way to a 25-16 victory. The fourth set saw the two teams tied on 10 occasions, including at 24. A NU service error and an attack error was just enough room for College of Idaho to come through with the 26-24 victory to even the match at two sets apiece to force a fifth and deciding set.

The fifth set saw College of Idaho emerge away from a 5-5 tie to score four-straight points to take a 9-5 lead. In the spurt, Chanlar O'Neil recorded a service ace and a kill by Haley McUne to go along with a pair of hitting errors by the Eagles put C of I ahead 9-5. The Yotes managed to stretch the lead to as large as 13-7 and the support of the College of Idaho men's and women's soccer teams spurred the team on its way to victory. Earlier on Saturday, the two soccer programs had defeated Northwest by matching scores of 4-0. The Yotes would go on to win the set by a 15-10 margin for the match victory for College of Idaho.

Liz Mendiola on the win over Northwest (Sept. 16)Statistically for College of Idaho it was an all-around team effort as Analise Hitchcock had 28 assists, eight digs and three aces; Clair Hodge had 16 digs and five assists; Savannah Hutchins had 12 assists and nine digs; Jade Warren hit .579 with 13 kills and six blocks; Haley McUne had a double double with 10 kills and 12 digs to go along with three service aces; Janae Rayborn had 14 kills, a .316 hitting percentage; Gabriella Rios had four kills and four blocks; Alexa Wheeler had five kills and five blocks.

Now with a five-match winning streak, College of Idaho will host Eastern Oregon at 7 p.m. at the J.A. Albertson Activity Center on Tuesday, Sept. 19.
